A Pair of Victorian Signal Cannons 1890
Reference Number: D10254
Antique 19th Century Victorian pair of signal cannons, mounted on wheeled wooden bases and secured with bronze pins and chains. One of the cannons features a long fuse attached to the rear and both have a serial number stamped on the underside of the barrel. These pieces make for fantastic conversation starters, suitable for any interior, whether modern or traditional.
Small starter cannons, often referred to as signal cannons or saluting cannons, were primarily used for ceremonial and signalling purposes. In the 1800s, bronze was a favoured material for these cannons due to its durability, resistance to corrosion, and ease of casting into intricate designs. Bronze starter cannons were commonly used on ships to signal the start of a race or event, announce the arrival or departure of a vessel, and during celebrations or military salutes. Their portability and reliability made them ideal for use both on land and at sea.
